Refine the Shape of Your Nose with Rhinoplasty

woman's facial profileAs the centermost feature of the face, the nose can balance and define an individual's overall facial appearance. A nose shape that complements all facial features and looks completely natural contributes significantly to an individual's confidence in his or her appearance. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure can help those who feel dissatisfied with the shape of their nose by creating aesthetic and functional refinements. Dr. Robert J. Oldham has been delivering outstanding results through rhinoplasty at his Bethesda practice since 1977. The Rhinoplasty Procedure

During your consultation, Dr. Oldham will perform an examination and take careful note of your facial features. After discussing your goals for the procedure, our surgeon will make a recommendation to help you achieve the results you desire. It is important for the patient to be actively involved in the planning process in order to feel comfortable and knowledgeable with the entire procedure, and to establish realistic expectations.

Rhinoplasty is not exclusively performed for cosmetic reasons. It can also be useful in helping patients who have breathing difficulties related to a deviated septum. The septum is the part of the nose that separates the left and right nostrils, and a deviation can obstruct proper air flow through one or both nostrils.

Rhinoplasty can be either open or closed. It can be performed through an incision inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or through a small, hidden incision on the underside of the nose (open rhinoplasty). Depending on the shaping and contouring that your procedure involves, Dr. Oldham will recommend the most appropriate method. Dr. Oldham believes in taking a conservative and artistic approach to plastic surgery, and he will only recommend the method that meets your aesthetic goals in the least invasive way possible.

The Recovery Period

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and most patients are released from the surgical suite after a brief observation period (typically 1-2 hours) to rest and recover at home. The nose will be placed in a splint, with packing placed on the inside of the nose in a way that will provide support while allowing you to continue breathing comfortably. This will need to be worn for the initial 4 to 7 days following surgery. Typically, rhinoplasty patients can expect minor discomfort, swelling, and bruising for the first several days following surgery, but this is easily controlled with medication. Patients can generally go out without showing signs of the surgery after about 10 days, but full recovery from the procedure could take several months to one year.
