A mommy makeover is a customized plastic surgery procedure that is performed to restore your appearance after pregnancy and childbirth. Many women experience undesirable physical changes as a result of pregnancy, especially in areas around the breasts, abdomen, and buttocks.
Dr. Roger Oldham can perform your customized mommy makeover at our practice in Bethesda, MD. Here, Dr. Oldham discusses the mommy makeover recovery timeline so patients know what to expect after treatment.
Options for Your Makeover
Just as every pregnancy is unique, so are your body’s recovery needs. During your initial consultation with Dr. Oldham, several mommy makeover options will be discussed that meet your needs and budget. The recommended cosmetic procedures may include:
- Breast augmentation, lift, or reduction
- Skin treatments (BOTOX, fillers, laser treatment, microdermabrasion)
- Body contouring to remove excess skin
What to Expect during Recovery from a Mommy Makeover
Each procedure presents its own recovery timeline. Here’s an overview of what to expect based on which procedures are performed. If multiple procedures are performed at the same time, it could add to your recovery timeline.
Liposuction uses a device called a cannula to gently break up and remove fat deposits. Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Good candidates should be within 25 pounds of their desired weight and in good health.
Patients should immediately return home after the procedure and rest as much as possible.
Bandages and dressings will be placed near the cannula’s incision site.
You will most likely be sent home with a compression garment to reduce swelling.
Minor pain can be managed with prescription medications or over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr. Oldham will advise you on how best to manage your pain.
In the first few weeks of recovery, your mobility will return. On average, most patients are able to return to work in just a few days, but it is advised to continue wearing your compression garment until around two weeks post-surgery, unless otherwise directed by Dr. Oldham.
Bruising, swelling, and other side effects of the liposuction procedure should begin subsiding during the first few weeks.
Over the first few months following liposuction, you may notice loose skin begin to tighten as the body adjusts to the cosmetic procedure. The full benefits of liposuction are generally apparent around the six-month period.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
A tummy tuck can deliver a more toned and defined abdomen. The process removes excess skin from the abdominal area.
Following surgery, a surgical dressing will be used to cover the incision sites, and small tubes may be left to allow for drainage of fluids and excess blood.
Moderate pain is common after surgery. Dr. Oldham will prescribe appropriate pain medication.
You’ll need to wear a supportive abdominal garment in the weeks following your tummy tuck.
During the first several weeks following the abdominoplasty, it is important to move with care and avoid straining positions. Dr. Oldham will monitor your progress during follow-up visits.
Breast augmentation through the use of silicone gel and saline implants can restore the desired look, shape, and firmness of your breasts.
Full recovery from the implant procedure can take several weeks.
While most patients are able to return to work within a week, strenuous movement and exercise should be strictly avoided for the first month following surgery.
Moderate pain, bruising, and swelling are common during the first week and can last up to several weeks.
The prominence of surgical scars will partially but not fully fade over time.
