ASPS and APA share advantages of early surgery for protruding ears: Otoplasty in Bethesda, Maryland

Dr. Roger J. Oldham is a board certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon with more than 25 years of experience performing surgeries such as abdominoplasty, breast lift, brow lift, rhinoplasty, and Otoplasty (reshaping of the ear).  Ear pinning surgery (otoplasty) is a procedure that helps reduce the ear’s protruding profile to a more proportional shape and angle.

As demonstrated in these pictures of patients before and after ear pinning (ear contouring) surgery, Dr. Oldham has performed otoplasty on countless occasions to children and adults of all ages.  Some people are surprised when surgeries are performed on young children, but much like treatments surgery to correct anything from a cleft lip to teeth that aren’t aligning properly, ear pinning surgery has advantages to being performed earlier.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has research to support the emotional advantages of cosmetic surgery, and the American Psychological Association not only confirms this benefit, but cites risk only when prior emotional disturbances or issues are present—hence the argument for ear pinning surgery in younger children before self-image solidifies and teasing in school begins to rise.

Selecting your surgeon is a very important part of the surgical decision-making process.  Call our Bethesda office to schedule your consultation with Dr. Oldham.  You (and/or your child) will receive ample time to understand the procedure and ask any questions regarding the surgery length, recovery, and cost.
