Body Contouring 101 Part I: Tummy Tuck Advice with Dr. Roger J. Oldham, Bethesda Plastic Surgeon

For more than 25 years, Dr. Roger J. Oldham has been helping patients find the sleek and toned physique they seek.  Through a range of body contouring procedures, including abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), modified abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck), and liposuction, Dr. Oldham can help your body reach its aesthetic potential.  When patients seek abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with Dr. Oldham, they are choosing a surgery which is considered body contouring.  Dr. Oldham can help sculpt the shape using a combination of liposuction, muscle tightening, and removal of excess skin and fat.  All three of the prodedures mentioned above could be potential solutions for your stubborn fat problem.  In these three “Body Contouring 101” blog posts, Dr. Oldham will explain the benefits of each procedure and go on to compare them.

When you visit Dr. Oldham’s photo gallery to see picture of patients before and after tummy tuck/abdominoplasty surgery, you might notice that large areas of fatty tissue appear to be magically removed from their abdomen.  The resulting image is aesthetically-pleasing and presents the body in a more contoured way.  Full abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a procedure whereby the skin around the abdomen is separated from fatty tissue, allowing thorough removal of excess tissue.  When fat is gathered in the abdomen, the abdominal muscles tend to drift away from the core, making exercise routines which target the abdomen only minimally effective.    During the procedure, Dr. Oldham is able to tighten these abdominal muscles, making your post-operative workouts even more effective.  After excess fat is removed, Dr. Oldham removes excess skin  from the abdominal area, securing the redraped skin and leaving the abdomen looking sleek and contoured.  In modified abdominoplasty, the area of treatment is isolated to the lower abdomen, under the naval, which may be appropriate for some patients.  Liposuction, the least invasive of all three, is also the least-effective in removing very large masses of excess fat, especially when there is skin laxity.  Liposuction is very effective in targeting specific areas of the body, but only when the abdominal skin has good tone.

Located in Bethesda, near Montgomery Mall and the I-270 Spur, Dr. Oldham’s office serves patients from all over the Washington D.C. area including Maryland: Potomac, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Montgomery Village, Bethesda, Olney, Rockville, Chevy Chase, and Germantown, Maryland; Virginia: Falls Church McLean, Herndon, Arlington, Vienna, Chantilly, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Annandale, and Georgetown in Northwest Washington D.C.
