Cosmetic plastic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery: what’s the difference? Dr. Roger J. Oldham of Bethesda answers

Dr. Roger J. Oldham has been performing cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery (breast surgery, body contouring surgery, and facial rejuvenation procedures) for 25+ years. Dr. Roger Oldham has built a repertoire of happy patients who keep referring their friends to Dr. Roger J. Oldham, board certified plastic surgeon by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Personal consultations are scheduled for all of our cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery patients, because Dr. Roger J. Oldham knows the importance of listening to his patients.

Patients may wonder why Dr. Roger J. Oldham calls his practice “cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.” Is cosmetic plastic surgery the same as reconstructive plastic surgery? According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “the plastic surgeon performs cosmetic surgery to reshape normal structures of the face or body in order to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed to correct abnormalities of facial or body structures caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, injuries, previous or concurrent surgeries, infection, tumors, or other disease.” Because of our system of health insurance coverage in America, this difference allows providers to determine if a surgery is elective, optional or it if it is medically necessary. Dr. Roger J. Oldham performs elective surgery for individuals (including breast surgery—breast implants/augmentation, breast lift/mastopexy, and breast reduction—body contouring—abdominoplasty/tummy tuck, liposuction, arm lift—and facial rejuvenation procedures—facelift, neck lift, brow lift, and rhinoplasty/nose job surgery). But, Dr. Roger J. Oldham’s Bethesda practice also features an in-office surgery center for less invasive out-patient procedures like fillers (Restylane, Juvederm), Botox, Fraxel laser treatment, and mole removal.

In his Bethesda, Maryland practice and surgery center, Dr. Oldham sees patients from Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Great Falls, McLean, Reston, Arlington Maryland, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Kensington, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Potomac, Silver Spring, and Rockville.
