Vibrant, healthy skin is possible at any age, but beautiful skin requires good care. Proper nutrition and sufficient rest and relaxation all do their part to help keep your skin healthy. Where these leave off, however, advanced skin care techniques must pick up to counter the stresses of every day living, as well as the effects of UV radiation, environmental pollutants, and aging. At the practice of Dr. Roger J. Oldham, we offer a full range of skin care procedures including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Restylane®, and Juvéderm™ to Bethesda, Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, DC patients. Many procedures, such as BOTOX ® injections can be completed over a simple, lunch-hour visit.

Clear and naturally based, Restylane® and Juvéderm™ are FDA-approved dermal fillers that work to fill and smooth out deep facial lines and wrinkles. Composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body among collagen fibers, Restylane® and Juvéderm™ require an allergy test prior to treatment and break down without trace in the system. Restylane® or Juvéderm™ injections at our Bethesda, Maryland practice can greatly improve the appearance of deep lines between the nose and mouth or create natural fullness in the lips. They are also commonly used to help soften fine lines around the mouth. To learn more about Restylane® and Juvéderm™ treatments in Maryland, contact our cosmetic surgery practice today.

Fat gives the face its youthful softness and vitality. Returning lost fat to an aging face through fat injections, therefore, can restore a more youthful appearance. Fat transfer is effective at filling facial wrinkles and creating fuller, more sensual lips. And fat has the added benefit of being your own bodily tissue, so there is no chance of incompatibility or allergic reaction. Results from fat injections can be very long lasting. Learn more about fat grafting on our face page or contact us with any questions.
The Practice of Roger J. Oldham offers an extensive selection of injectable fillers for all your facial needs. For further information on our injectable fillers, see our lunchtime treatments page.
An exciting new laser has been recently introduced which has been found to be especially effective in treating fine and medium lines, pigmented sun spots, melasma (brown facial pigmentation of pregnancy), and acne scars. Fraxel has generated a great deal of interest in the skin care community and has attracted widespread media attention.
The Fraxel laser works by stimulating regeneration of the deeper collagen and elastin fibers of the skin. The positive effects of the procedure continue to improve for up to six months and the results last for years.
Are you looking for healthy, glowing skin with an easy, non-invasive treatment? Then look no further that microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a safe, nonsurgical method of exfoliating damaged outer layers of skin to reveal fresh, new skin beneath.
During microdermabrasion, our certified esthetician uses a handheld device to polish your skin with a stream of fine, sterilized crystals. These crystals, along with the dead and damaged skin cells, are then vacuumed cleanly away.
Microdermabrasion effectively reduces fine lines, age spots, blemishes, and dry or scaly skin. It unblocks clogged pores and helps clear toxins and other impurities from the skin. It also reduces the size of enlarged pores and encourages cellular turnover, so your skin will radiate health and vitality.
Microdermabrasion is a fast and convenient treatment. It produces immediately smoother and softer skin with minimal, if any, discomfort. While several procedures are required over a period of time to achieve the optimal result, there is no downtime after a microdermabrasion and you may return to your normal activities immediately afterward. Make-up can be applied directly after treatment, so you can get on with your day.
If you are interested in learning more microdermabrasion, or in consulting with our certified esthetician to find out which facial rejuvenation treatments might be best for you, contact The Practice of Dr. Roger J. Oldham today.

A light or medium chemical peel can be an excellent way to exfoliate dead or damaged outer layers of skin and encourage the production of fresh, new skin cells. Our practice offers a wide selection of customized chemical peels to suit nearly all skin types. If you have age spots, sun damage, or other skin damage, a chemical peel might be the right option for you. Contact our cosmetic surgery practice today and let us show you what is possible.
The PCA Peel exfoliating treatments address problems of hyper pigmentation resulting from sun damage or hormonal changes. It will help soften the depth of surface lines and is very effective in improving your complexion and skin texture.
The TCA Peel (trichloracetic acid/lactic acid) will blend, penetrate and remove layers of skin. Varying the strength and amount of time the acid remains in contact with the skin will determine the effectiveness of the peel.
In most cases, you will see results immediately, with little or no "down-time" after a chemical peel. With the TCA peel, there is usually some minor flaking of your skin, so you may want to plan the procedure around your social activities.
It used to be that camouflage with make-up was the only treatment option for people with disfiguring port-wine stains. Modern laser technology, however, has changed that. Laser treatment penetrates the skin to shrink or destroy over-dilated blood vessels at the skin surface, significantly diminishing the appearance of the stain or removing it altogether. Typically, a series of eight to ten laser treatments is needed for maximum benefit. To learn more about laser removal of port-wine stains, contact our Bethesda, Maryland plastic surgery practice today.
Though critical and lifesaving, surgery to remove skin cancer can leave a patient with unfortunate esthetic and functional consequences, particularly in the facial area. Reconstructive surgery with a skilled plastic surgeon can be an important final step in the skin cancer recovery process. It can restore a natural appearance to the face and full functionality to areas such as the nose, eyelids, ears, or lips. Dr. Oldham brings both great compassion and great skill to each skin cancer reconstruction patient he treats.
Often, Dr. Oldham is called upon to reconstruct facial defects, which sometimes can be quite large, after skin cancer removal with the Moh's technique. Elimination of skin cancers often involves excision of delicate facial features, and only with his extraordinary skill can his patients regain a normal appearance.
A mole is a flat or slightly elevated pigmented spot on the skin which usually appears in the first two decades of life. Occasionally, babies are born with moles. These pigmented lesions are sometimes in an area where they are subjected to irritation and subsequent infection or they sometimes have an objectionable appearance. Moles can also undergo changes in appearance. For reasons such as these, people often seek mole removal by a plastic surgeon.
Less commonly, a pigmented lesion may change, becoming irritated, darker or lighter, larger, irregular, or it may bleed. These are often signs of malignant melanoma and the lesion should be removed so that the tissue can be evaluated microscopically. If the diagnosis of melanoma is made, additional surgery is then performed to remove more skin around the melanoma to ensure that all melanoma has been excised.
Any skin irregularity which undergoes a change should be evaluated for possible removal and for microscopic analysis for skin cancer. The skin lesion may have a scarred appearance, it may have a pink or red scaly contour, it may bleed, or it may simply be a flesh colored bump which becomes larger. While a skin cancer may have an innocuous appearance to a lay person, it may have a very characteristic appearance to a professional. Any abnormal area of the skin which becomes larger, bleeds, or changes in any way should be evaluated for possible surgical removal.
In order to enhance and augment the effects of microdermabrasion, our esthetician recommends a number of skin care products ranging from cleansers to moisturizers to medical strength anti-aging treatments which can be conveniently applied at home. While microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin, the skin care products more effectively reach the deeper layers of skin where they can produce the healthier complexion and skin texture you desire.
