Have you learned your ABCs? Chances are, if you’re reading this, you know that Dr. Oldham is not referring to the alphabet.  The American Cancer society has developed a catchy, easy-to-remember acronym for keeping an eye on mole

Despite using 45 SPF sunscreen, sometimes I still get red after being in the sun. Do I need a stronger sunscreen?

How sunscreen is used is as important as is the SPF (Sun Protective Factor). First, sunscreen should be applied thirty minutes before exposure to the sun since it is not effective for the first one-half hour.  Secondly, apply sunscreen generously.  Thirdly, reapply every two hours or more frequently, especially if you perspire heavily or go into the water.

Sun Exposure

Research performed on rats may revolutionize the world of self-tanning creams.  The tanning creams available today are typically dyes, offering no protection from the dangers of sun exposure.  The new cream developed in the rat lab actually reduces the incidence of skin cancer by turning the skin a golden bronze, without sun exposure.  The pigment of the skin is changed in much the same way as occurs with a sun tan.  The cream has only been tested in mice, so the safety in humans is completely unknown. This may be the next generation of skin tanners; but for the present, continue to get color from a bottle, not the sun.

FICTION: A year-around bronze glow from very mild sun exposure looks so attractive and youthful, it must be healty.

FACT:  While a suntan gives the appearance of health and vigor, chronic sun exposure produces premature aging by breaking down the elastic fibers and thinning the layers of the skin.  While ultraviolet rays from the sun improves skin complexion temporarily, the long term detrimental effects of the sun far outweigh the short-term positive benefits.

FICTION: While a Basal Cell Carcinoma is technically a malignancy, it is harmless since it does not spread and grows very slowly.

FACT:  Basal Cell Carcinomas do, in fact, grow very slowly.  Although it is rare, there are reports of Basal Cell Carcinomas which metastasize.  The greatest concern, however, is that these tumors can reach a very large size if left untreated and can readily invade and destroy underlying tissue including cartilage and bone.

I have had a mole all of my life, but recently it has been changing. Since I have had it so long, is it safe to leave it alone?

Melanoma, a potentially life-threatening skin cancer, can start as a melanoma or it can start as a normal mole and later turn into a melanoma.  Any mole which changes in any way should be evaluated for possible mole removal.
